Must have resources for ICAN exams

If you are a Nigerian or in Nigeria and want to practice accounting and finance, then you should consider a professional certificate from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. To pass this exam, you need to follow a person who understands the terrain to guide you. That's why we are here. In this article, we explained the resources an individual is required to have to pass the ICAN exam.

Which resources are needed?

To pass the ICAN exam, the resources needed are mainly study texts, past questions, and your pen. But, which study texts? These are available on their websites. The exam level you want to write will determine the study materials you will require from the website. The most interesting thing is that the resources are packed with exactly what is needed to pass each exam.

Based on the new ICAN syllabus starting from November 2025, the following study texts are required at each level of the exam.

The Foundation level requires: Financial accounting, management accounting, business environment, and corporate and business law study materials. At the Skill level, the resources needed are financial reporting, Taxation, performance management, audit assurance and forensics, financial management, and public sector accounting and finance.

For professional-level exams, strategic business reporting, advanced taxation, advanced auditing assurance and forensics, strategic financial management, and case study materials are required. Each study text is available here.

You will also need the past questions as a guide when studying the text. ICAN has a library located in different parts of Lagos. If you live here, you may consider visiting those libraries to learn more about areas you do not understand.

Are tuition centres resources?

The only resources recommended by ICAN to pass their exams are their study texts. These texts are easy to read and understand. However, to boost confidence for the exam or to reduce learning time, students might decide to go to tuition centres to learn from professional tutors. Some private tutors specialise in specific papers for the exams.

Tuition centres and professional private tutors are not ICAN resources. However, their knowledge and wealth of experience can be utilized by students writing the examinations to easily pass the exam.
